The most outstanding detail of tbe chancel, in grandeur and artistic worth, is the altar-piece. This is a magnificent monument of gilded wood and life-size polychrome, burnished statues. It is formed by five sections with varied scenes from the New Testament, created by a number of religious artists, of whom Rodrigo Alem n, Vigarni, Petit Juan, Egas and Pedro Gumiel deserve special mention. Commissioned by Cisneros, it was elaborated between 1497and 1504.
