The Main Sacristy

sacristia1.jpg After crossing the anteroom we enter the sacristy, which is a magnificent gallery of paintings. The largest and most visible is the great fresco by Lucas Jordán wbich encompasses the entire vault. The composition of this is on a vast scale, with numerous figures of angels and blessed ones. In the northern pan we observe the imposition of the chasuble on St. Ildefonse by the Virgin. The representation of this venerable Toledan tradition constitutes the most abundant and characteristie ornamental motif in the Cathedral. It is known in Toledo as tbe "Descent of the Virgin".
In the retable over the altar in front of the sacristy, fittingly framed in jasper and bronze, is the famous painting by El Greco known as the "Spoliation of Jesus", depicting several executioners despoiling Jesus of his red tunic before the Crucifixion.
By El Greco too is the Apostolate, without doubt the best of the four collections of likenesses of the Apostles painted by the Cretan genius, and the paintings "Jesus Giving His Blessing", "Saint Peter's Tears" and "Santo Domingo".
