The Chapter House |
This is where
the Chapter holds chapter meetings, normally once a fortnight. The Chapter Room and
antechamber were constructed at the order of Cisneros, and designed by Enrique de Egas and
Pedro Gumiel. The building commenced in 1504 and was completed in 1512. Above the
Gothic portal with the coat of arms of Fonseca are figures of Mary, St. John and St.
James. The ceiling of the antechamber, by Francisco de Lara
and Diego López Arenas is Mudéjar in style. At the sidesare two magnificent cupboards of
walnut and pear wood in which tbe minutes of the Chapter meetings are filed. The one on
the left, the work of Gregorio Pardo, is of particular merit. The one on the right is much
later - 18 th century - by Gregorio López Durango. |
